Protein skimmers are applied to most saltwater aquariums to remove certain proteins, amino acids and other organic compounds from the water before decomposing into nitrogenous waste. The aquariums waste is removed by using the polarity of water-borne proteins that are attracted to the air bubbles surface. Protein skimming is the only form of filtration that physically removes organic compounds before they decompose, lightening the load on the biological filter and improving the water’s overall nutrient levels. Protein skimmers work by injecting numerous tiny bubbles into the water chamber where an enormous air-water interface strips protein molecules from the aquarium water and draws them upward for collection. The more micro air bubbles that reside in the reaction chamber, the range of proteins that can be extracted.
